CREATURE KITCHEN

Creepy Cozy is a weird little tossup. It’s like… like a cold salad with pineapple and garlic. With cheese and raisins. It shouldn’t work, even on paper, and yet, somehow, this mix is to die for. Creepy Cozy is also a mix that is extremely hard to nail down and therefore also very easy to make shoddy. Way too many times I’ve seen variety of attempts to make something relaxing but spooky fall flat simply because all the creators could muster was an off-brand Burtonesque ‘cutesy Halloween’ vibe. It is not an easy task to balance on the thin string of a line between relaxing and chilling, after all.
CREATURE KITCHEN nails it, though. To an almost eerie perfection. It has the atmosphere to chill, and yet, somehow, thanks to subtle lights, gentle sounds, the sweet relaxing jubies of a sweltering summer night under a cloudless sky, it never veers into uncanny or straight up scary. And, at the same time, it never loses its soft edge, that slight crawling feeling over your back that something is ever so slightly off kilter. Might be tiny touches. The slight wrongness in our cryptid and animal companions. The little tricks that never go into jump scares but still add to the spooky zest of the presentation.
If anything, I must applaud the creators for a well-maintained sense of restraint. It would be oh so easy to add a monster. A jump scare. Some unnecessary extra strangeness to hopefully farm off the shock value and the ‘unexpected twist’. Make it a Steamers game, one that starts all rather soft and tender and then bam! Hits you over the head with gore or true terror of some kind. But nope! Nothing like that here – it is meant to be eerie, but pillowy eeriness. Warm and soft like a moonlight over a nighttime pond.

Oh, and the game itself? Yeah, seems I sort of forget to mention what it is all about. But hey, it’s nothing too complex! You’re taking care of a little cabin in the woods. And welcome a few unexpected critters and cryptids, keeping them content and docile by the gifts of food! Yup, as the title can hint at, it is a cooking game – a simple one, mixed in with a gentle puzzler, where bit by bit you uncover more ingredients, recipes and more creatures to feed. Each has their own likes and to progress you need to cook stuff they like. Since befriending them and making pals with the critters will grant you keys to further unlock shelves, cupboard and entire rooms.
It’s a short romp. Sweet, too. I was charmed multiple times in such a narrow timespan. Spotting the raccoon using the rocking chair. Supposed Doggy wandering into the kitchen to lay down. Family of rats happily scampering around in search of cheese I dropped. It’s… strangely comforting. Feels nice to keep the growing menagerie fed. Feels great to progress at a steady pace, game always doing its best to give you a little goal to chase every few minutes. It’s never demanding, but also never tedious or boring – a perfectly measured experience, a little dish made with love.
I could try to extend myself, write a few more paragraphs but… I am under no word limit milestone, and this is it, really. CREATURE KITCHEN is a small game by design and it does what it wants to achieve in a superlative manner. It is one of the very few creepy-cozy games where the promise of soft creepy vibes is upheld. It never cheapens the experience, never tries to extend it with some artificial nonsense. It’s perfect – for what it is. If a soft cooking game about feeding slightly eerie creatures sounds like something up your alley, do not hesitate to pick it up and have a lovely evening or two. I promise, it is distilled fun with tender vibes to soothe your soul.
